What Are Eye Diseases?
Eye diseases affect the eye’s structure or function, leading to vision impairment or loss. Common examples include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease.
Keratoconus is an eye disease that affects the cornea. It can cause blurriness and distorted vision but does not usually result in blindness. Keratoconus can occur in your 20s or 30s and can be corrected using glasses or contact lenses.

Eye diseases can occur due to various factors such as genetics, infections, injuries, aging, and underlying health conditions like diabetes.
These factors can lead to structural abnormalities, inflammation, or tissue and blood vessel damage, which results in vision impairment or loss. Early detection and proper management can help prevent complications and maintain vision.
Eye Disease Management
iSight Optometry collaborates with professionals in Kelowna to provide comprehensive care for our patients affected by eye disease. We work closely with a local ophthalmologist for advanced diagnosis and treatment of conditions.
We also refer our patients to an in-town surgeon for specialized procedures like cataract surgery or to reduce eye pressure caused by glaucoma. By utilizing our community and accessing the expertise of various specialists, we can provide optimal management of our patient’s eye health. It is through our collaborative approach that we’re able to deliver tailored care.
MacuMira: Protect Your Vision Against AMD
MacuMira is a clinically proven and Health Canada-approved treatment option that can provide hope for those seeking to slow the progression of dry AMD and potentially improve their vision. Macumira is a safe and noninvasive treatment that uses microcurrent stimulation to target the retinal cells in your eye. This gentle stimulation is designed to help:
• Enhance the function of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a layer crucial for removing waste products from the macula
• Improve blood flow and nourish the macula, the central area responsible for sharp, central vision
• Stimulate the production of essential cellular components that promote retinal health.
Common Eye Diseases
As we age, so do our eyes. Age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease are a few of the most common eye diseases that affect Canadians. Vision loss may affect a person’s daily life, which is why it’s important to schedule regular eye check-ups.
Our exams include vision screening and diagnostics tests, followed by a discussion with a doctor to address concerns, review findings, and confirm that your prescription is accurate. We also screen for presbyopia, cataracts, and dry eye.
A trusted eye doctor can help prevent, diagnose, and treat eye disease.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Also known as AMD, this disease affects the centre of a person’s vision. Vision may appear blurry, and the blurred area could increase in size over time. Straight lines may appear wavy, and patients with age-related macular degeneration may experience dark spots and vision loss in certain areas. However, pain is rarely associated with AMD.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma affects the optic nerve and can result in permanent loss of vision. There are no symptoms in this disease’s early stages, so early detection is important. If glaucoma is left untreated, symptoms may include blurry vision and a loss of peripheral vision, resulting in tunnel vision, pain, and sensitivity to light.
Diabetic Eye Disease
High sugar levels can weaken blood vessels in the eye, leading to bleeding and swelling in the back of the eye. Other symptoms may include blurry or double vision. Vision loss caused by diabetes can be prevented through regular check-ups. We recommend those living with diabetes receive yearly eye exams.
Cataracts
Cataracts are a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, causing blurry vision, faded colours, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataract surgery is a safe and common procedure to replace the clouded lens with a clear artificial lens, restoring vision.
While cataracts are a natural part of aging, certain lifestyle factors like smoking and excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of developing them earlier.
Dry Eye
Dry eye disease can cause symptoms like blurry vision, watery eyes, and general eye irritation. We can help you manage dry eye through different treatment options and find relief.
It’s essential to treat and manage dry eye syndrome to help alleviate symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.
